PROJECT CONCEPT: Constructed entirely of historical materials from the Canfor Sawmill – the main employer in Canal Flats from 1928 to 2015.  Transforming these salvaged materials from local industry represents the progression of technology, from past to present and into the future.

 his artwork is an invitation to explore Canal Flats – its community, its history and its natural environment.  The Portal encourages people to “come into” the art – to become a part of it.  Their presence and interaction enhances the art and adds to its vitality, just as each individual in Canal Flats is a vital part of the community.  Passing through the sculpture mirrors our journey through time and inspires us to contribute to and become part of the future of Canal Flats – to build a community that is not only prosperous, but ultimately livable.

Its fluid form speaks to the passage of time, the evolution of industry and technology and to the beauty and power of the Columbia River.
